For lots of people, planning their funeral is like making a will – they know what they want to happen, and they don’t want to leave this to chance. They want to spare their family the stress of making decisions on their behalf when they aren’t there for their family to consult them.

For these reasons, more than 40,000 people in the UK have taken out a funeral plan.

The Independent Way Plan is one of the Golden Charter pre-payment plans that we offer our clients. You can specify every detail of your funeral in advance, and make sure that all of the known costs are covered. These costs are set at today’s prices, and they are guaranteed to cover all services, no matter what is required.

Please call us for assistance in tailoring your plan to your specific needs and completing the form. We can meet with you in our offices or in the comfort of your own home.

You can download an Independent Way brochure here.

Golden Charter Funeral Plan FAQ's

Can I take out a plan for someone else?

Yes, simply complete the ‘plan holder’s representative’ section of the application process. We’ll ensure all correspondence is sent to you – complete confidentiality is guaranteed.

What if I move to a different area?

Please let us know you are moving so we can update our records. You will have the option to move your plan to a different funeral director, if required.

What if I change my mind?

If you cancel within 30 days we will refund the payment you have made. For details of cancellation terms after 30 days, please see the terms and conditions.

Can I take out a joint plan?

A joint or couple plan is arranged in both names but can only be used for one person. It is usual for the first person who passes away to use the plan, although it can be used for the second. A joint plan is beneficial to those who would like to plan ahead but are not in a position to purchase two plans. Please note you cannot purchase a joint plan online, however this can be set up over the phone.

What if I die whilst on holiday?

As an additional benefit, should you die away from home but within mainland UK, we will arrange transportation back to the funeral home. Overseas transportation is not included in your plan. Please refer to the terms and conditions for full details.

What if I have special requests for my funeral?

You can tell us about any special wishes for your funeral when you apply. If these incur additional costs, not covered by your plan, these will need to be paid at the time of the funeral.

What happens when I die?

As a plan holder you will receive a membership pack containing contact details for your funeral director; when the time comes your family simply contacts the funeral director and quotes your plan number. The funeral director will then take care of all the arrangements.

What happens with my money?

Your payments are protected. Depending on how you have chosen to pay, your money will be paid into the Golden Charter Trust or a life insurance policy with AXA Wealth Ltd. It will be held there until needed to pay for your funeral arrangements.

What happens once I've applied?

When your plan is accepted, you will receive a membership pack including a membership card and a summary of plan information and, once your plan is fully paid, a certificate containing your plan number (with a spare certificate to give to your next of kin). If you have chosen to pay by fixed monthly payments, your certificates will be sent after 2 years’ continuous payment.

We may also call you to make sure you are happy with the details of your plan and payment choice.

What is a Will?

A Will is a document which expresses your wishes for what happens with your estate when you die. When you die a copy of the Will should be passed to your executors who will aim to fulfil your wishes in accordance with the instructions in your Will.

Where is my Will stored?

Golden Charter can either store your Will in a secure location (if you have chosen to include this in your plan) or send it back to you for safe keeping.

What if I already have a Will?

You can use your Golden Charter Will as an opportunity to update your existing Will with a new one. Alternatively, you might consider gifting it to a family member or friend.
